Austin
O’Brien Catholic High School has approximately 800 students and offers a
variety of programs. The focus of the school is strong academics, which
is enriched by a well-rounded co-curricular program. Our school excels
in athletics, fine arts, and technology. Both the academic and the
co-curricular programs are taught through the framework of the five core
values of Catholic education: dignity & respect, honesty, loyalty,
fairness, and communal & personal growth. Students participate in daily
prayer, retreats, sponsorship of charities, and religious celebrations.
We strive to foster respect for others and service in our community.
Our students are well prepared for post-secondary training as a result
of our academic program and its emphasis on laboratory work. Many
students experience the latest in technology in our career and
technology lab. Each year a high percentage of our graduating class will
enroll at the University of Alberta. Many other students continue their
education at a variety of other post-secondary institutions.
Students at Austin O’Brien enjoy a library and resource centre where
they are welcome to use the computers to either access information from
our network or explore the internet. The school also houses the Stedward
Fitness Centre. A full-time fitness instructor, who works with disabled
community members operates the centre. Our students enjoy the equipment
and can benefit from personal fitness instruction from our school
Chaplain, Mrs. Cuglietta or from the Stedward Fitness Instructor.
We have three District Programs housed at Austin O’Brien. The Ukrainian
Bilingual program brings in students from all over the city to study
Ukrainian Language Arts and Ukrainian Religion. The remainder of their
schedule is filled with required subjects and options from our course
list. New to Austin O’Brien this year is the Polish Bilingual Program.
It will also provide Polish Language Arts instruction to students and
allow students to study religion with emphasis on Polish traditions and
culture.
Our school is also home for the Educational Experiences students. These
students are mentally challenged and spend time together learning life
skills. They are also involved with work experience in our community. We
are also pleased to welcome some of them to our academic classes
Austin O’Brien also houses the Senior High Golf Academy. Students may
enroll in this academy whether they have had previous experience in a
Golf program or not.
The philosophy of the school directs students to develop all of their
God-given gifts and talents to the fullest. Our school motto is “Many
gifts, one Spirit”.
We aspire to graduate students who are prepared and confident to lead
happy productive lives and, in turn, to share their lives with others.
